It had been since 2016 that a Yamaha rider did not show up at Losail, the first race of the season, with the title of reigning world champion. At that time it was Jorge Lorenzo, the last rider to win the title before Marc Marquez's four-year domination. Now it will be Fabio Quartararo's turn to defend the title in the colors of the Japanese manufacturer.
There is a lot of competition and the task for "el Diablo" will be anything but easy. The most accredited opponents without a doubt are: the vice-champion Bagnaia, the 2020 world champion Joan Mir, Marc Marquez looking for redemption after practically two years of injury and why not, maybe there will also be Franco Morbidelli to contend for the final victory with his teammate.
The Italian rider switched to the factory Yamaha team in the second half of last season; 2021 was a transition year for him, not only because of the change of team but also because of a nagging knee injury that affected his performance. The class of '94 is ready to relaunch himself in 2022 and challenge Quartararo just as he did in his Petronas team days.
There is a lot of enthusiasm and desire to start again in the box...in short, the ingredients for fun are all there.
